I’ve added more themes to our repertoire, bringing the total to 400+.
I’ve also been dabbling in my own theme customization, so if you can’t seem to find one that meets your needs or preferences, let me know and I’ll work on one for you. Eventually, I hope to have some unique and expressive themes exclusively available to Edd’s Tavern members.
Just in case you haven’t ventured over to the Resource Page recently, here is a list of the current feeds:
EurekAlert! http://www.eurekalert.org/pubnews.php
PLoS Biology http://www.plosbiology.org/home.action
Popular Science http://www.popsci.com/
Science Daily http://www.sciencedaily.com/news/
ScienceNews.org http://www.sciencenews.org/
Scientific American http://www.scientificamerican.com/
SpringerLink http://www.springerlink.com/home/main.mpx
I promise I’ll work on the layout of the page as soon as time allows.
And I’m still open for suggestions for additional publication suggestions, free or paid subscriptions for community use.
Do you pay for any subscriptions to online journals or magazines?
Have you considered splitting the cost with a few pirates?
Tell me what online publications you would like to see here at Edd’s and I’ll see about working them into the new Subscription Plan for Pirates, coming soon. Here’s how it will work:
- Anyone can visit the Resource Page and view the feeds from several free e-magazines.
- Hopefully, I will be able to include a collaborative piece by the members of this site for registered members in the near future. Signing up and blogging at Edd’s Tavern will always be free.
- Paid Subscribers will have the option to choose from several plans that will be based on Categories, Popular Bundles, and Customizable Selections that will be priced depending upon the number of publications you wish to sign up for.
Please give me your opinions and suggestions. As the size of our pirate crew grows, I should be able to add more and more choices, as well as making it more affordable to access some great resources.
I was recently informed that the Doomsday Clock has been set back by one minute, from five minutes until midnight to six minutes until midnight (article here).
At first, I felt my spirits momentarily lifted, but then I read this (emphasis mine):
“A news conference announcing the change took place this morning at the New York Academy of Sciences Building in New York City. The actual clock is housed at the Bulletin of Atomic Sciences (BAS) office in Chicago, Ill., and so a representation of the clock was shown at Thursday’s news conference.”
Why are we not being shown the actual clock? What are they hiding? Is there even a real ‘Doomsday Clock,’ or have we been bamboozled for the last sixty plus years? Maybe it’s all a conspiracy to boost the public’s confidence in the future of mankind. This might have been a publicity stunt to shield us from the true Doomsday Minute Hand’s position, possibly poised terrifyingly close to the fateful hour. Should I enjoy my blissful ignorance, or do I demand to know, damn the consequences?
No, no, I should give them the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure evil geniuses are continuously assaulting the Bulletin of Atomic Sciences office in attempts at sabotaging or stealing the extraordinary timepiece, protected by an elite squad of Atomic Scientists. It is surely too precious to expose to the hoi polloi for a mere press conference. Yes, I shall once again sleep soundly, secure in the knowledge that the fate of the world is safe, in an office building in Chicago, Illinois.
Why would you ruin perfectly good fish head stew with so many spices?
The amount of time I spend online has increased almost exponentially over the last few years.
I’ve always had an eclectic taste in music, literature, and art, as well as science and technology, math and human behavior. I contend that there is no such thing as a useless fact and that acquiring knowledge for knowledge’s sake is a noble endeavour.
All that being said, I sometimes feel that I spend an inordinate amount of time surfing the internet. I flick from site to site, looking for nuggets of funny, interesting, enriching, or impactful information and sometimes feel as if I’m on the couch, going through all the channels, thinking, ‘Nah. Seen it already. Boring. Rerun. Nope. Commercial. Commercial. Commercial. This guy again? Commercial. Commercial. Commercial.’
Which brings me to the point of this post.
One of the things I’d like to see Edd’s Tavern become is a repository for educational, insightful, and entertaining information. I feel like we’re well on our way with a small but growing vanguard of some of the most intelligent, articulate, and creative individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting…and Nef Yoo Blackbeard.
So please encourage your favorite authors by commenting on their input and feel free to register and enrich your fellow pirates with witty and/or informative contributions.
Remember, if you’ve been good all year…well, the universe won’t care but the people around would probably appreciate it.
Happy Monkey to everyone!
There are now over 275 themes available for your blog here at Edd’s Tavern. If you see something you like but still need help modifying it, just let me know.
Here’s the new Online Store for Edd’s Tavern. Please feel free to make suggestions as to what you would like to see become available.
Not too long ago, PZ Myers mentioned a tendency for some to prefer ignorance to intelligence. I recently noticed while watching the television program Bones (a show I do not watch frequently), that the title character’s only endearing personality trait was honesty. She was emotionless, socially oblivious, and condescending. Even I found her stupid, prejudiced, conservative partner to be more likable. The message that the writers seemed to want conveyed is that a person can be scientific and knowledgeable only at the expense of a healthy, personal, emotional connection to anyone.
Can’t a scientist be portrayed as anything other than mad, absent-minded, or socially inept?
I do like Numb3rs, however.
Here’s the first step in making this site self-supporting: A Nef Yoo t-shirt!

Shirts are $25 plus shipping and tax. Send me an email if you’re interested, edd@eddstavern.com. Please allow at least three weeks for delivery.
I’ve been incredibly busy the last few weeks and, with the holidays coming up, that isn’t likely to change until the new year. Today, however, I’ve set aside some time to work on my online projects.
You might have noticed the new ‘Thought of the Day’ blog intended to help our bloggers stay active. I hope this will also help me remember my responsibility to lead by example.
The crew has returned from shore leave. They have me worried. They haven’t stopped singing this tune, and it’s not a proper pirate shanty at all!
Plundr’n your way on the seas today takes everything you’ve got
Taking a break from fish head stew, sure would help a lot
Wouldn’t you like a tankard o’ grog?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody buys a round,
but they’re always on your tab
You wanna be where you can see,
outta your one good eye,
that the patrons are scum but they’ve all
been maimed
You wanna go where wenches know,
pirates are all the same,
You wanna be where the cabin boys know
Your name
