My bass gear is getting O.L.D. I bought my bass in about 1994, about a year later I bought my pickup, preamp and amplifier, and it’s been gigged a lot since then. It’s not the age, it’s the mileage that does it; but when you’ve got both age and mileage? It’s all a bit old and knackered. [...] -

Hi, S’presso! In the end I didn’t do a neck graft, I just re-dressed the surfaces of the break and glued and screwed it together again. It’s not a perfect fit at the heel, but the neck is straight and the bass stays in tune. The action is about right too, so no messing about [...]

Thanks, Edd. It is relevant, I suppose, because there is no ‘cure’ for asthma, you can live for years without it bothering you, but like me you can find it kicking your ass right out of nowhere. It’s not actually the illness that’s the problem, it’s the psychological adjustment to ‘being poorly’, ‘not keeping well’, [...]

My current double bass is completely knackered. There’s no other way to describe it, it’s knackered. The neck was broken in a fall, fixed expensively (but badly) by a luthier, the repair opened up again, was fixed cheaply by me, it opened up again, was fixed properly by me and a luthiery student friend, stayed fixed [...] -

“Jeffrey Bernard is unwell” was a headline that used to appear with some regularity in The Spectator magazine, apologising for the now late Mr. Bernard’s failure to provide a column that week. It became the title of a play by the now also late Keith Waterhouse, in which Bernard is accidentally locked in his favourite pub [...]

OK, here I am, then. Blogging. That will be interesting. What am I going to talk about? Er… OK, then. Why are we here? I don’t mean all that existentialist stuff, I mean a little more specifically: why are we here at Edd’s Tavern? Well, about two years ago, my son came home from school [...]

Er…
OK, then. Why are we here? I don’t mean all that existentialist stuff, I mean a little more specifically: why are we here at Edd’s Tavern?
Well, about two years ago, my son came home from school absolutely livid. He [...]

“Let there be dancing in the streets, drinking in the saloons, and necking in the parlor!” So proclaimed Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) in A Night At The Opera in 1935. I don’t do my necking in the parlor, I use the kitchen. A quick quiz here, folks. What would you use this for?
